Boat projects and comm update

There is a lot of work getting a sailboat re-commissioned after it has been sitting for a while.  I have heard it said that having a sailboat is the art of doing maintenance in exotic locations.  And that seems to be true!  There are lots of little things that need to be looked after, like door latches not holding – and a couple of bigger things too – like the lead-acid batteries being super low level.  The main house batteries are three 200Ahr monsters, but they are lead-acid.  As soon as we can I think we will upgrade to Lithium.  They hold way more energy, charge much more efficiently, weigh less, etc…Only down side is they cost more.

I think that our communications equipment is starting to settle down now.  We have a cellphone that is set up as a permanent wifi hotspot, and the satellite system is up and running.  The easiest way to send us messages is with the satellite SMS service (which is free).  Go to

http://messaging.iridium.com/

and send a message to our sat phone, number is 881641464345

You can also send email through the satellite – send to scott.huckerby@myiridium.net

And one final neat feature with the satellite, is that the tracking page is now active.  Go to this web page and you can see where we are.  The satellite system uploads our position every hour.
